MOROCCO

Chefchaouen – The Blue Pearl

Chefchaouen, in northwest Morocco, takes its name from the two mountain peaks overlooking the city — “look at the horns.” Its old town, or Medina, is famous for its narrow streets and traditional houses painted in countless shades of blue, from cobalt and indigo to aquamarine and azure. There are different stories behind the colour. Some locals say the walls were painted blue in the 1970s to attract tourists, making the whole town something of a staged setting. Another theory is that blue keeps mosquitoes away and represents the sky and heaven. Whatever the reason, Chefchaouen is undeniably photogenic.
