The Four Sources Trail in the Gotthard Massif leads to the sources of four major rivers – the Rhine, Rhône, Reuss, and Ticino. The 85-kilometre hut-to-hut hike takes five days and passes through a remarkable variety of alpine landscapes, from wetlands, streams, ponds, and mountain lakes to high open terrain above the treeline. Along the way, the trail reveals a rich mix of plants, wildlife, and traces of the region’s history. Long sections offer wide views across the Alps, including a viewpoint overlooking the Rhône Glacier. It is a demanding but rewarding hike that combines nature, mountain scenery, and a sense of the landscape’s origins.
