Once a shimmering lake 70 km southwest of Santiago, Laguna Aculeo was once full of life, fed by the Andes and popular with swimmers and sailors. Within just a decade, drought, population growth, and water-intensive farming dried it out completely. Where boats once moved across the water, cattle now walk over cracked earth. Yet some still hold on to hope — believing that with enough rain, the lake could come back to life.
