Chefchaouen – ‘The Blue Pearl’
Chefchaouen (translated: ‚look at the horns‘) is a city in northwest Morocco. It got its name from the two mountain peaks overlooking the area. The traditional houses and narrow streets of the ‘Medina’ (old town in the North African area) are painted in white and all kinds of blue tones: Cobalt and indigo, aquamarine and azure. According to locals the walls were painted blue in the 70s to attract tourism and therefore some kind of a staged setting. Another theory is that this color keeps mosquitos away and symbolizes the sky and heaven. However photogenic.
